SUSTAINABILITY

CHoPS 2027 Sustainability Commitment

We are building a rail-first, low-waste, and climate-responsible conference in Delft. As engineers, scientists, and practitioners in particulate systems, we want to minimise the footprint of the event-and lead by example.

What we are committing to

Rail-first travel
We encourage train travel whenever feasible. Delft is well connected to Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris. Choosing rail over air typically reduces the most carbon-intensive part of your conference footprint.
Low-waste catering
Vegetarian-first options, local sourcing where possible, and active food-waste reduction-supported by reusables and refill stations.
Digital-first operations
A digital programme by default (print on request), responsible materials, and clear prompts that make sustainable choices the easy choices.

What we include in the event footprint

To calculate a realistic footprint per participant, we account for the most meaningful sources of emissions:

Travel to and from the conference • Catering and food production • Energy use of the venue and AV equipment • Printed materials and merchandise • Accommodation for invited speakers
Scale (order of magnitude)
Taken together, these factors typically represent approximately 30–80 tonnes of CO₂ for a three-day conference (depending on travel modes and distances). We invite each participant to offset their share directly during registration.

Offsetting: simple, transparent, and tied to your travel

During registration you can select an offset option aligned with your expected travel type. The amounts below are indicative and include an allowance for the broader event footprint (venue energy, catering, and materials).

Travel typeCO₂ (approx.)Offset cost (incl. event footprint)
Short distance (train / car)~0.1 tonne€ 7.50
European flight~0.3 tonne€ 22.50
Intercontinental flight~0.6 tonne€ 42.00

Our partner: Trees for All

We collaborate with Trees for All, a Dutch foundation that plants and protects forests worldwide based on the principle: "the right tree in the right place."

Projects with impact
Examples include reforestation initiatives that support local communities, improve biodiversity, and strengthen long-term resilience.

Low-waste conference operations

Catering
Vegetarian-first menus • reusable dishes/cups/cutlery • refill water stations • clearly labelled allergens and dietary options.
Materials
Digital programme by default • print only when needed • responsible lanyards and conference materials.
Waste & recycling
On-site sorting and recycling stations • clear signage and prompts encouraging sustainable choices throughout the venue.

Together for impact

By travelling rail-first where possible and offsetting your share during registration, you help make CHoPS 2027 a climate-responsible event. Let's grow forests-one conference at a time.
